Owls are some of my favorite subjects. If you ever got hold of my sketchbook/journals, they are likely full of owls. In evolutionary terms, the short eared owl is a bird of open grasslands. Which is another way of saying that its one of the most widely distributed owls in the world. It is also found in North Dakota, which makes my life easier, as that's where I spend the majority of my time as well.
Want to find some of your own short eared owls to photograph? Your odds are fairly good. Try open grasslands, that's where they like to nest. In North Dakota winter, your best time to find them active is dawn and dusk. Unfortunately, it is very cold in North Dakota in winter anytime of day, so dress accordingly. I personally survive on heat packs in my boots and mittens from December to about April. Just sayin'. It builds character.
